Post Game Notes- 4/27/14

Girls,
As I mentioned after the game, I felt better about our team after today's 1-0 loss than I did after our previous 1-0 win against CSA.  Each one of you did some great things today.

I felt we moved to space and passed the ball much better.  We stepped to win way more balls than last game.  We strung together 5-10 pass combinations many times.  I think one time we strung together about 15 consecutive passes.  I hate the phrase, "some times the better team does not win".  I will not use that phrase.  The better team finds a way to win. In this game, winning is scoring more than the other team.  We did not do that, so yes, they were the better team.

BUT, I will say we possessed the ball better than they did, won more 50/50 balls, passed way better, made more runs, had more shots on goal, had more corner kicks, etc...  We just couldn't finish any of our shots (and we had so many chances!), and they finished one.

I felt, after speaking to a couple parents, that some girls put the loss on their shoulders.  Girls, we lost because we didn't score and they did.

But, we can learn after a game like tonight.  One in which we dominated every stat on the field except the score.  And what we learn from that is "how can we win games like that where we definitely should have won based on how we play.  I think every girl, and coach (trust me, I have over and over), should ask "what was 1 thing I could have done better.  "did I eat the right foods before the game", did I try and dribble to much when the easy pass made sense", did I clear the ball when I probably had more time to find an open person for a pass", "did I not talk enough on defense or offense", "could I have went to bed at a decent hour and had more energy from it", "could I have________(fill in your blank)_________________________".

Finally, start thinking about this for me--Each time you touch the ball, keep track to yourself of the end result.  Did you make a good pass, did you lose it, did you get it back, did you misspass and it went out of bounds, etc.--basically, was the end result-- good or not.  As I mentioned, Sheena leads our team in this category of "positive end results".  We'll talk more about this at practice.  This is something that is tracked by many college and pro teams.

Anyway girls, as I said, I am proud of how you played.  That was our first regular season loss in two years!!! And it was against the team you tied first with last season, and were tied for first this season.  You really really played a very good game, and we have worked so hard on one and touch touch passing and spacing, and you did it against a really good team, even though I know you are a better team than them....  Have a great week!  See you all tomorrow.

4/22/14 Game Notes vs CSA Premier

Girls,
I'll take the win.  We started off strong, playing really good high pressure.  Sheena made a good pass and Kylie stayed composed with a nice finish, using a quick toe poke.  I felt the first 15 minutes, we were moving to space, making good passes, great runs, and were moving to get open for girls.

For whatever reason, we tended to slow down.  I felt girls were dribbling a little much when the simple pass made more sense.  then girls tended to dribble to much because the simple pass wasn't available--meaning teammates were not being proactive checking to space, but instead were standing next to their defender.

Olivia played an amazing game saving us.  Trust me, I am very happy we did enough to beat a team 1-0 that we had tied the last two previous meetings!

I just know that if we play like that this Sunday, against the other first place team with us that we would probably not get the Win (this is also the team that we were co-champions with last season-FC Bellbrook).

We'll go over stuff such as continuing our dribble to goal instead of pulling up on the 1v1 breakaways (get into the box at least, trying to get to endline to slot in (if they are denying your shot on goal).  This will always result in either 1. a cross for goal, 2. a shot on goal if possible, 3. a foul on them resulting in a PK, or 4. them blocking the cross usually giving us a corner kick.  All of those are better than pulling up just before the 18 yard box, unless you see someone trailing for sure.  But if you still bring it to the endline, and slot it in, that trailer should be there to finish.

Other things we need to go over--when target (striker) needs to dribble versus one touch (think "up, back, through).

I did see many good passing combinations (usually give and goes).  Was happy to see that.  That showed me girls passing was moving after the pass.

Anyway, we came up with the W, and lets build from there.  Let's also think of HOW we can get that same intensity we had our first game Saturday when we won every single ball the entire game, and moved into space for passes every time!

3-0 girls, let's continue this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4/19/14 weekend League Game 1 and 2 Post Game Notes

WieKing Family--Happy Easter!  What a great day!

Game 1 vs. Pride:
Girls, I was, for lack of better words... Stunned!  We practiced being first in taking balls out of the air.  We practiced 1 touch passing, and we went over in detail our new formation.
The passing was pretty darn good that first game--specifically in the second half.  Their defense played a very high and straight line.  They caught us offside at least 10 times.   Anyway, we kept trying to quickly send it over for our forwards to run on it.  But, after we spoke at halftime, and explained that if we play to feet and look to switch fields in the middle and work it back and forth, that we could play a through pass, and catch their defense off balance, which would allow or forwards to get behind their defense.  We did exactly that the second half that gave us much better scoring opportunities.

We went down 1-0 with one of the best shots(volley) from distance I have ever seen in a game, outside of professional soccer!  That girl was very surprised she hit it that solid and put it up in the upper 90's.  No goalie in the world could have stopped that.  Incredible shot.

You girls played WAY to good and hard that game to lose that.  Us coaches wanted you girls to win so bad because you deserved too.  And what you did the last four minutes was just enough to make a movie on overcoming adversity!

Before we go there, I just can't tell you enough how if you play with that mentality, THAT ENTIRE GAME FROM THE ENTIRE TEAM, that there are not many teams that will beat you.  You girls, from the very first whistle, won every single ball.  Back to that word "stunned" I used.  For me to even call out one name for how well they played, is unfair.  It was the biggest team effort for the entire 70 minutes, that I have ever witnessed from this team.  The last time I saw a total team play like that at one time was watching a girls Notre Dame team about 2 years ago.  I can promise you all this.  If you work that hard, and tell yourself you will step to and win every ball, and the one you don't win, you will do absolutely everything in your power to win it back--you will continue to win many, many, many games.  The talk, the hustle, the effort, the movement off the ball, the support, the pressure on the ball, the PHYSICALITY!!!  My gosh, you girls "GAVE IT" to a strong team that was just relegated from the Buckeye State Division last fall!!

I am so glad it paid off.  Watching you girl fight for that loose ball in front of the goal, bodies flying everywhere, and somehow Megan got to it and helped us win that battle to tie it 1-1 in the 66th minute.  And then, in the 69th minute, Jenna, who received it from the left side, quickly looked up right for Ciara, who was staying high and wide, but onside, and Jenna made that perfect through pass--Ciara took off like a missile the minute it left Jenna's foot and had a PERFECT first touch to goal, and used her very good speed (the speed I witnessed the night before in the track meet!), and played a great low shot for our team to go up 2-1 with a minute left to win the most exciting and rewarding game I've ever seen you girls play--and then Eric and Gary and I high fived each other like we just won the World Cup!!!!  WOW!!!!  Girls, you all played so great, every position, and our defense was just incredible as always, but stepped it up even more to win every darn ball.  Gosh I want to ramble on forever about this game!!! REMEMBER THAT INTENSITY EVERY GAME!!!!!!!

Game 2 vs Santos
Now we go on to play our second game of the day, to another team that just had been in the Buckeye State division in the fall--and it was their first game of the day!  That is asking a lot from a team.

But again, you girls did it.  You played on an 8v8 field that had potholes all over it.  I promise I won't allow this team to ever play on a field like that again--I learned my lesson with Molly that game.  By the way, thanks all for your emails and texts and calls.  She actually is walking on it and the swelling is minimal.  She can't fully extend it, so running is out.  I'm guessing (hoping) it's just a sprain--I thought for sure we saw our first ACL tear; will give it a few days and hopefully it'll continue to get better--if not, we'll get her checked out.

Anyway, on a field that small, with it in the most terrible condition a field could be, I new the "beautiful game" was not gonna happen.  I new it was gonna be a dogfight.

We noticed (ERIC) right away after a few plays, they had a girl that was as fast as our fastest, as strong as our strongest, and as skilled as our most skilled.  And as Eric added, she had a very high soccer IQ and saw the field well.  It's not often we would "man mark" a girl, but we felt if we could take her out of the game, that we would beat this team.  Molly did a great job man marking her till she got hurt, and Kylie after that (especially being sick), and the rest of you did such a great job working with one less offensive player due to molly and kylie not leaving her side, even when we had the ball--so proud you were able to win that game!

You all continued to work soo hard.  That team was skilled, fast, and very aggressive.  I've never ever been the one to say this, but they played dirty.  Constantly pulling shirts, clipping from behind, and just mean girls--not only to you all, but to each other.  I know how they were fighting with their own teammates and cursing at each other.

Girls, that right there, is how a team that might have matched you in skill, speed and strength, lost 2-0.  You girls play so well as a team, and they all played as individuals.   That game could have went either way, but you continued to do great things.  I know we had two, just incredible shots from DISTANCE, that put us ahead 2-0 to win that game (great shots Hope and Ciara!).  And that team might have walked away saying "they just got two lucky shots".  But here is what I want you all to think about.  If hope and Ciara don't play High Pressure, and step in front of those forwards to win that ball, would they even had a chance to shoot those incredible shots????  No, they wouldn't have.  Remember girls, we can't even have a chance for those shots if we don't get to the ball first, and we did!  And, it also was our game plan.  Remember Coach Eric said "they are drawing straws to see who wants to play goalie because they don't have a full time goalie, so take as many shots as possible"?!  And that is what you girls did.  Such a great WIN!!!!!

See you all at practice and then we play a team on Tuesday that we have played twice in the past, and tied them 0-0 and 1-1.  Please, come play like we did this weekend, and I do not foresee a tie this time!

Post Tourny Notes

Girls, As I said, be proud of yourself this weekend--not satisfied, but darn proud.  As coach Gary reminded me today, just about a year and a half ago at the Mead Cup, we were watching that TFA team play in the 5-star division before our game, and I told Gary, "One day our team will play like this".  If we would have played that team then, it would have been a 10-0 game in there favor.  All of the teams we played this year so far would have been blowouts a year or so ago.

I was a little anxious about this tourny, knowing these are just fantastic teams we'd be playing and hoping we could compete and not get embarrassed--and you definitely competed.  Oh, and by the way, the brackets were definitely set up for us to play the three hardest teams.   But, no biggie--I like being the underdog ;)

Tennessee Team
Well, they did up winning the tourny, beating the KH Academy Blue team 1-0.  They were a very very good team.  Not quite like that Missouri team, but they were good (by the way, the Kings Academy Red team lost 3-1 to that Missouri team if that means anything in showing you how far you've come!).  We didn't play our best, and give great effort until the second half.  Girls, it was 2-0 at halftime.  You girls held them scoreless that second half and had great chances on goal!  We even hit the crossbar once.  Yes, they were the better team, but we absolutely competed, with enough shot opportunities to have won.  The goals we gave up were simple mental errors that we learn from. We also were playing our old formation with only two central mids.  And both of their goals were scored down the middle of the field--so that's why I went to a 3 center mid formation the next game.  Very proud, and very happy we left their knowing we gave ourselves chances to score multiple times against such a good team.  These were the Tennessee State Cup Winners, and ranked high Nationally.

Blue Academy Team
What can I say!!  You tied more than just the Blue Academy Team.  If you are not aware, they wanted so bad to not lose to us that they actually took 4 "Guest Players" from the Red Academy team ONLY for the game against us this weekend!!  Feel good about not only tieing a team with a mix of the two academy teams, but outplaying that team--especially in the second half!!!!!  (Academy teams don't like it when their Select team beats them--but we are not just a select team, we are the WieKings!).  I believe we truly are a season or two at the most, away from being the top Kings team---and if we did play the Red team now, I think we could compete enough to have at least the possibility to pull out a win if we played our "A" game!  I truly truly mean that.  Wow, be extremely proud of that game.  Especially on a field so cruddy.  I think if that was on turf, the more skilled team wins, which was you girls.  You definitely outplayed them, and REALLY outplayed them the second half, giving us multiple scoring opportunities (even a shot that hit the inside of the crossbar, and roll on the goal line...!

TFA ELITE Team
Girls, as I said, that was the team 1.5 years ago that I was in "awe" over, and created the vision for what I wanted.  I would have never have guess that you girls would even have the chance to play such a good team in only 1.5 years later.  And not only play them, but be 1 minute away from a tie!  I will not hide the fact that 80% of the game was played in our half.  I will talk about that in a second.  But, be proud girls.  That team was the State Cup Bronze Finalist of Ohio.  The competition in Ohio is very good.  That team ALSO finished in 2nd place in their MRL league.  ---1 minute away from tieing that team!!!  How about that!

Ok, the reason we were gassed, including girls that even run track and are in great shape.  It all comes down to First Touch.  Remember this Quote:  "GREAT teams understand that The First Touch is the Only Touch".  What does that mean?  It does not mean you should only play 1 touch soccer.  It does not mean that skillful moves should not be used to get yourslef out of tough situations or take a defender one on one if the very simple pass isn't available.  It means though, that if everyone is working hard to get open and communicating with their teammate BEFORE she receives the ball, then your teammate should only have to one touch (two at most) the ball too you.  She will know her options before she receives the ball, so no need to touch it more than once, or twice at the most.

TFA, even on that cruddy grass field, was able to do this.  Their touch was very good, and their girls were moving to get open.  We on the other hand, didn't have the cleanest touch.  That lack of a great first touch made you have to work hard to try and keep possession.  You had a defender on you so quick, it was hard to regain control after the sloppy first touch.  They were stringing together 4 and 5 passes, keeping us on defense.  We were lucky to put together 2 passes together without losing the ball.  Which, always had us scrambling on defense.  THAT is why we were so exhausted.  Playing defense for the majority of the game is exhausting.

Now, how do we get better on this first touch so we can play at that level (we are getting close).  As you may know, I am offering a third practice day at WieFit.  It is HIGHLY recommended, but it is optional.  We will work and work and work on first touch!  For those that want additional soccer, I am sacrificing my time to do it, so I am here if you want more help.  We will offer this Monday Evenings at WieFit from 7:45-9:00 on Mondays.

Be proud girls.  Like Coach Eric said, do not get down about our record this year, coming off such an incredible fall season with only 1 loss!  We have continued to climb the ladder of competitive leagues each season, and it this year, we threw ourselves in against the very best, and we are competing!   We will continue to work hard, get a great first touch, learn to take balls out of the air, learn our new formation that we threw on you girls just before our second game yesterday,  and we will eventually beat this competition we are facing--I promise, especially if you are willing and excited about putting in the hard work! I believe playing these great teams is only forcing you to work harder, play and think quicker, and prepare us for the State Cup!

I am proud of how far you have come, but not satisfied yet--I hope you all feel the same!!!
