Girls,
Open the link below and watch the 1:04 mark and the 1:10 mark. At the last training session, we learned 3 very effective turns. These three turns are mandatory for all of you to be able to do without thinking; so we will continue to work on them in the future. They are used at least 40 or more times every professional game I watch. In this video, you will see how these two turns (1:04 and 1:10) are used on an offensive attack, which results in a goal!
At the 1:04 mark, you will see the defender have the ball played to the foot that is CLOSEST to the defender, but then touches it through his legs and turns (we called this the "trick turn"--remember, "bait" the defender to go for the ball by calling it to the foot closest to her).
And the turn at the 1:10 mark is the most common turn used in pro soccer. We called it the "inward turn". Please pay attention how his touch is so perfect on the ball that it almost appears that the ball "sticks" to his foot. It really is a perfect turn!
This game actually took place today. Liverpool was leading 2-0 at halftime, but Arsenal came back to tie the game 2-2. Both teams are doing well this year in the English Premiere League (EPL).
Enjoy (and practice these turns!!!).

(Chris Sturm, these are the turns I used for your team too last session. So, feel free to forward this link to your team so they can also see these turns used in live game action!).

Tiki Taka Introduction
Please click the "Possession Playlist" Link on the right side of the Blog.
There are two short videos there that demonstrate the heart of Barcelona FC play and also led to Spain wining the World Cup in 2010. It is truly what is meant when people refer to soccer as the "beautiful game".
Barcelona does not have the best athletes (tallest, quickest, fastest), nor the best individual skill, nor the highest paid. They have Messi and though he is considered the best scorer in the world I would argue he does not have the skills of a Christiano Ronaldo or a Ronaldinho. But what he does have is a tremendous nose for the goal (like a Wayne Rooney) but what makes him better is he has a team that by far have the best passing skills and have the best team play there ever has been.
Barcelona most of the time when they play other teams even when they loose they out posses them by at least 2-1. Meaning Barcelona has the ball at their feet over 66% of the time and their opponents are just chasing.
When you watch especially the 2nd video of Barcelona playing please notice these key things:
1. When a Bacelona person has the ball at least 3 team mates are moving to give them a clear easy pass
2. The passes are made directly to feet, not long leading passes in open space (95% of the time)
3. The passes are firm but on the ground, not bouncing so that the receiver is able to easily control the ball and make the next pass.
4. When they receive the ball they already know where they are passing next.
5. Please see the last 2 incredible wall passes Messi makes with his forwards to score a goal in the end. It wasn't so much his dribbling as the, a lot like the warm-up video.
Of course these are all great players but you girls also are learning the foot skills so that you can move to this next level of intentional passing, using your foot skills to get out of trouble. The key just like basketball the receiving player needs to move to an open line of passing and just like basketball again the passer needs to pass (firm, on the ground) the ball to the person not just kick it in the direction a team mate may be.

Girls,
Get use to a season that will demand your best effort and play! Most teams in this division are U14 teams in higher level leagues and divisions. Saturday's game was against a u14 Buckeye Div 2 team.
Good new--we had our opportunities. We missed many opportunities to score. We showed some brilliant moments at time in our possession play, which led to us attacking. We didn't finish like we should have on many of the attacks. IMPORTANT: These opportunities on offense came because we were:
1. Moving to get open instead of standing and watching
2. Winning 50/50 balls
3. Not trying to take on defenders in our middle and defensive third of the field--instead we were looking for other options such as playing back to supporting fullback or goalie, and switching fields (playing AWAY from pressure)
4. Checking to the ball to get open.
Bad News (areas to improve)-- the 4 things listed above, have to be for the entire game. In the first 20 minutes, we did totally opposite of the above. Here were some observations:
1. when we got the ball, we had no options, because we (the entire team on the field) wasn't quickly moving to SPACE, which would MAKE IT EASY FOR THE GIRL WITH THE BALL TO PLAY it to you.
2. Lost so many 50/50 balls.
3. Playing into pressure, instead of looking to play away from pressure (drop to defender, goalie, switch fields, etc.). Many times our outside mids or fullbacks were looking to turn the ball right into traffic instead of making the easy drop (drop to other fullback, or to goalie). Always make the simple pass! In our attacking third, we can take players 1v1 more often--in our middle and def third, we gotta make the simple pass whenever possible.
4. Panicked on their high pressure--when they pressure up, we have to make quicker decisions, know where to touch/play the ball before we receive it, and those without the ball need to move to space faster--we instead stood next to our defenders. The SECOND you see we are going to possess the ball, every girl on the field must FLY to Space to be an option--THE SECOND!!!
5. And we didn't pressure them at all in the first 20 minutes. When they are dropping passes to maintain possession, we ALL Move up. This doesn't mean we all "chase balls". This means that ONE person, closest to ball, quickly pressures the ball, and EVERYONE else quickly find a player and DENY's any pass to them.
Girls, here is the good news. Again, you showed brilliance at times. And we have that first half on Film to watch and break down!!!
See you all tonight at WieFit. We will spend 1/2 watching film, and other half testing routine and practicing "turns". Will be a good night!
